About Adding and subtracting fractions in AQA GCSE

To add or subtract fractions, they must have the same denominator. If they don't, find the lowest common denominator (LCD), convert both fractions, then add or subtract the numerators. The denominator stays the same. For example: 2/3 + 1/4. The LCD of 3 and 4 is 12. Convert: 2/3 = 8/12 and 1/4 = 3/12. Then 8/12 + 3/12 = 11/12. With mixed numbers, you can either convert to improper fractions first, or deal with the whole numbers and fractions separately. Always simplify your final answer if possible.
