About Calculations in standard form in AQA GCSE

For multiplication in standard form: multiply the numbers and add the powers. (3 × 10⁴) × (2 × 10⁵) = 6 × 10⁹. If the result isn't in standard form, adjust it. For division: divide the numbers and subtract the powers. (8 × 10⁶) ÷ (2 × 10²) = 4 × 10⁴. For addition and subtraction, the powers must be the same. Convert one number so both have the same power, then add or subtract the front numbers. For example: 3 × 10⁵ + 4 × 10⁴ = 3 × 10⁵ + 0.4 × 10⁵ = 3.4 × 10⁵.
