About Mode in AQA GCSE

The mode is the most frequently occurring value in a dataset. It is the only average that can be used with non-numerical (categorical) data. **Finding the Mode:** Simply identify which value appears most often. **Key Points:** - A dataset can have no mode (if all values appear equally) - A dataset can have multiple modes (bimodal, multimodal) - Mode can be used with words/categories (e.g., favourite colour) **Modal Class:** For grouped data, the modal class is the class interval with the highest frequency. **Examples:** - 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6 → mode = 5 (appears 3 times) - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 → no mode (all appear once) - 2, 2, 3, 3, 4 → bimodal: 2 and 3 **Advantages:** - Easy to find - Not affected by extreme values - Can be used with categorical data **Disadvantages:** - May not exist - May be more than one - Does not use all the data **Exam Tips:** - Check for multiple modes - For grouped data, give the class interval, not a single value
